title: "Product variants"
---

**Variants** are the different *variations* or *versions* of the same product.

In Bolder every product has at least one variant, because strictly speaking it is a product's variant that the customer adds to the cart when making a purchase.

A product can have different sizes, colors, materials, contents, or other characteristics relevant to its sale, and to **show this information clearly and in an orderly way** to your customers, you can create different product variants.

To decide how the information of these variants is shown in your store, you can **set up variant options**.

This product setup lets your customers select the variant that best fits what they need, without having to search through the whole product catalog.

## Products with a single variant

As we mentioned before, all products have at least one variant *(except packs and gift cards)*. When you create a product, the variant is created automatically by default.

**Example I: Bolder Hoodie**

From the admin we create a new product called `Polerón Bolder` . By default it has a variant with the same name as the product.

When the customer views the product in the store, they will see the **add to cart** button without any additional options.

If the product is unique, or has no variations, your products will look like this.

## Products with multiple variants

If your product comes in different formats, measurements, materials, etc., you can create variants to present this information clearly in your store.

**Example II: Bolder Hoodie in different sizes**

Our `Polerón Bolder` product is now available in different sizes: `S, M, L y XL` , so we will create different variants so the customer can select the option they need.

From the product you created earlier > in the Variants section > Edit > Add variant.

In addition, when you edit the variant settings, you can change the **Variant options**, which are used to specify more details and define how they will be shown in the store.

In this case, we change the `Variante` option to `Talla` .

*Later we will look at the Variant option types.*

![](/media/452-6.webp)

This way, the customer will see each variant with the title Size.

![](/media/452-7.webp)

![](/media/452-8.webp)

When a product has more than one variant, the customer will have to choose among the different options to add the product to the cart

**Example III: Bolder Hoodie in different sizes and colors**

When your product variants have more dimensions, variant options become key to organizing the information.

In this case, the example product `Polerón Bolder` is available in different `**tallas**: S M, L y XL` but it will also be available in `**color**: blanco, negro y azul` .

For this, we create new variants, but also new variant options, which adds new columns for entering information.

Each product can have a maximum of 3 variant options.

![](/media/452-9.webp)

So the product is available in every size and every color, 12 variants were created in the end.

![](/media/452-10.webp)

For the customer the information is much simpler: they only have to select the size and color to make their purchase.

## Variant options

The **variant options** mentioned above can help you set up how variants are shown in your store.

In simple terms, in the admin panel they add an extra column of variant information and define its style, and for the customer they show the name of the option to choose with its own design.

Variant options can be set up directly from a product's variants, but we also recommend reviewing the general information about each of them:

From the panel > Products > Variant option, you can create or edit as needed.

Any change you make will be reflected in the products that have these variant options.

> **Note**
>
> In each product we can define **up to three variant options** and decide how they will be shown in the store, which is the **Option type**, which can be:
>
> - Radio
> - Dropdown
> - Button
> - Color
> - Image

### Radio

It is one of the most common and simplest ways to show variants, and the one used in the previous examples.

![](/media/452-13.webp)

### Dropdown

A dropdown or drop-down menu is a useful option when there are several variants available and you want to keep a clean interface. Instead of showing all the options in view, a single button is shown that displays the available options when clicked.

![](/media/452-14.webp)

### Button

Selection buttons. Unlike the Radio option, these stand out much more and give the product page a new style.

![](/media/452-15.webp)

### Color

Showing variants by color is used for products where color is a key feature. The variant colors are shown as a set of circles, so the customer can see right away what each option looks like.

### Image

Selection by image is one of the most visual options, since it shows variants as small images the customer can select. *Coming soon.*

## Variant information

- All product information is linked to or applies to **all its variants**. Description, attributes, type, brand, collections and tags, etc. *A variant can't have a different description from the rest.*
- Variants can have the same or different prices from each other.
- You can define whether all or some variants have a sale price.
- Each variant must have a unique set of information to be created.
- You can change the order in which variants are shown by changing their order in the admin.
- You can hide some variants if needed. If you want to hide the whole product, all its variants, or you need to block them, you must do it from the product page in "Status".

> **Note**
>
> You can create all the variants and variant options you need in a single step.
>
> In these examples we left out relevant information such as SKU or Weight, to make the explanation easier.

## Bulk creation of products with multiple variants

If you need to create a product with multiple variants quickly, you can do it through a bulk upload with a CSV file.

The file must contain the same columns you usually use to create products in a bulk upload; the difference is in the `title` and `variant_option` columns

- Every row in the file will have the same `title` , since this is the name of the "base product" - in the example `title: Polerón Bolder` .
- You must include in the `variant_option` column the variant option or options the product will have. For the example Size and color - `variant_options: Talla, Color` .
- Depending on how many variant options you have, you must add: `variant_option1` `variant_option2` `variant_option3` .

For the example the values are `variant_option1: S` `variant_option2: Blanco`

- If you work with color variants, you must use the `variant_color` column and enter the product's color code.

    For the example `variant_color:#FFFFFF`

[*Here you can see an example spreadsheet*](https://docs.google.com/spreadsheets/d/1_AC7j8_qfOxjWtlzm6OxCUdhA9_2B60ExNbjOX_ONCs/edit?usp=sharing)*, in which no additional product information or attributes were added.*
